Following a comprehensive evidentiary presentation by the Northeastern Regional Prosecutor’s Office of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Unit, based in Chiquimula, the Criminal, Drug Trafficking, and Environmental Crimes Sentencing Court of Zacapa rendered a guilty verdict against Iris E., who was charged with the offense of human trafficking in the form of sexual exploitation under aggravating circumstances.

The court imposed a custodial sentence of 10 years and 7 months in prison and levied a monetary fine of 300,000 quetzals.

Investigations conducted by the Public Ministry concluded that the crime was committed in 2020, to the detriment of a 13-year-old adolescent, who at the time was under the legal guardianship and care of the now-convicted individual. The betrayal of trust and abuse of custodial power were key aggravating factors considered in the court’s ruling.

As part of a dignified reparations framework, the court ordered that the convicted individual undergo mandatory psychological therapy aimed at fostering accountability, recognition of wrongdoing, and behavioral reform to reduce the risk of recidivism.

In addition, the court directed the Office of the Solicitor General to initiate legal proceedings for the judicial interdiction of the victim, with the objective of appointing legal representation to safeguard her fundamental rights, well-being, and comprehensive protection moving forward.
