The Regional Prosecutor’s Office Against Human Trafficking, based in Quetzaltenango, successfully obtained convictions against five individuals before the Criminal Sentencing Court with Specialized Jurisdiction in Human Trafficking and Migration Offenses of Huehuetenango for crimes related to human trafficking.

• Edílzar S., Dimas S., and Juan P. were each sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment and fined Q360,000 for promotion, facilitation, or favoring of prostitution and human trafficking in the form of sexual exploitation.
• Rubén M. received 16 years of imprisonment and a fine of Q380,000 for employing minors in work harmful to their integrity and dignity, promotion, facilitation, or favoring of prostitution, and human trafficking in its sexual exploitation modality.
• César X. was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment and a fine of Q400,000 for aggravated human trafficking in the sexual exploitation modality.

The Court also ordered a monetary compensation in the form of reparation to one of the victims and left the civil proceedings open for continuation.

According to the investigation, the convicted individuals were apprehended on August 29, 2020, during an operation at the business “Herdez” in Chimusinique, Huehuetenango, where they exploited a minor and facilitated the prostitution of adult women.

It was further established that one of the convicted, serving as a municipal councilor, transported the minor victim using a municipal ambulance to the exploitation site, facilitating the crime.

These convictions reflect the Public Ministry’s commitment to investigate, prosecute, and sanction human trafficking offenses while ensuring integral protection of victims and preventing impunity for perpetrators.
