The Public Ministry of Guatemala participated in the XXXI General Assembly of the Ibero-American Association of Public Ministries- AIAMP

 The Secretary of International Affairs and Cooperation, Mr. Eduardo Mejía Calito,  participated in the XXXI General Assembly of the Ibero-American Association of Public Ministries (AIAMP) in Santiago de Chile back on February 1 and 2, 2024. He aimed to represent the Public Ministry of Guatemala and, as a member of the Ad Hoc Committee, presented to the General Assembly the proposal for the Constitutive Treaty to elevate AIAMP to the status of an International Organization.

 

AIAMP, originally the Inter-American Association of Public Ministries, was founded in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on November 26, 1954. Initially focused on strengthening ties between American Public Ministries, it shifted towards Ibero-American orientation in 2002.

 

During the 30th Ordinary General Assembly in July 2023, Prosecutors and Attorneys General approved the creation of an Ad Hoc Technical Commission to study legal personality and funding options for AIAMP. The participants endorsed proposals to adopt a Treaty establishing AIAMP as an International Organization and the «Protocol for the Protection and Security of Prosecutors, Officials, and Employees of Public Ministries within AIAMP.

 

Additionally, approvals included the merger of the Working Group for the Implementation of the IberRed Regulations and the International Criminal Cooperation Network (REDCOOP). There were also endorsements for «Common Ibero-American Rules on Restorative Juvenile Criminal Justice,» presented by the Juvenile Criminal Justice and Restorative Justice Network, regional guidelines on the investigation and litigation of sexual violence cases, and the creation of the Ethics Commission and its statute, along with the corresponding amendment to the Association’s Statute, proposed by the Ethics Commission Working Group.
