Attorney General of Guatemala and Chief of the Public Ministry inaugurates the 2025 academic cycle of the Training Unit
In a formal ceremony held both in-person and virtually, the Attorney General of Guatemala and Chief of the Public Ministry, Mrs. María Consuelo Porras Argueta, inaugurated the academic cycle for the Training Unit (Unicap) for this year.
Attorney General Porras Argueta was accompanied by Mr. Jonás Rodolfo Hernández Pérez, Administrative Chief; Mrs. Julia María Juárez Sagüil, Second Deputy Secretary General in office; and Mr. Sergio Ortiz Herrera, Director of Unicap.
Also present was Mr. Óscar Sagastume Álvarez, Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, who delivered the inaugural lecture titled: “The Crucial Role of Criminal Investigation in the Effective Resolution of Criminal Cases.”
This lecture aimed to provide training on the importance of criminal investigation as a key tool in resolving criminal cases.
In her address, the Attorney General emphasized, “With the firm commitment to fulfill our constitutional duties and offer quality service to the citizens, we have implemented various tools during almost seven years leading the Public Ministry, with the aim of strengthening the institution.”
She also highlighted that training has been a central focus of her administration, reflected in the Strategic Plan 2022-2026, which stresses the need to continuously strengthen the staff’s capabilities.
The academic programs not only address the needs of technical and administrative areas but also provide comprehensive education. This effort has been recognized with the ISO 21001:2018 Certification, making the Public Ministry the only institution in the justice sector to obtain it, ensuring that the educational quality meets high standards.
“We are very proud of this international certification, as it not only makes us the only institution in the justice sector to possess it but also guarantees that the educational quality we are providing to Public Ministry staff adheres to the highest quality standards,” added the Attorney General.
Attorney General Porras Argueta concluded by stating that the inaugural lecture will not only benefit the staff but also strengthen the institution, increasing its capacity to face challenges in the criminal field.
“These results are measurable in data, not in narratives, and as we have always done during my tenure, we will continue putting all our effort into providing an effective and efficient service to the population, to whom we owe our work,” she emphasized.
On his part, Mr. Sergio Ortiz Herrera, Director of Unicap, presented the academic offerings for 2025, which include induction, professionalization, and specialization courses. These courses are aimed at technical, administrative, and prosecutorial staff, with the goal of achieving optimal performance in criminal prosecution and providing quality and compassionate attention to crime victims.
