The Public Ministry of Guatemala has taken significant steps in combating the crime of femicide. During October, the Prosecutor’s Office against Femicide conducted various actions related to this crime, resulting in six convictions and the presentation of 17 conclusive acts.

Additionally, 19 raids were executed for search, inspection and seizure to strengthen ongoing investigations. During the operations, the Public Ministry coordinated with the National Civil Police, led to the apprehension of four individuals.
Examples of these efforts:

The Prosecutor`s Office includes obtaining a 25-year, non-commutable prison sentence for Miguel Alexander Monsor García, convicted of femicide on April 26, 2022, in a commercial establishment in the capital’s Zone 1. The meticulous investigation by the prosecutors played a crucial role in securing the conviction.

The Ninth Tribunal of Criminal Sentencing, Narcoactivity and Crimes against the Environment, issued the sentence after giving evidentiary value to the means of investigation presented by the prosecutor’s team.
In another case, the 24-hour Special Criminal Court of First Instance against Crimes of Children and Adolescents, issued a processing order against Jackelin Esmeralda Soriano López and Luis David Guevara for manslaughter and mistreatment of minors.
The victim, a 1-year-and-6-month-old baby, succumbed to a head injury, leading to legal actions against the accused.

Furthermore, the Prosecutor’s Office against Femicide presented sufficient investigative evidence, resulting in a 33-year and 8-month non-commutable prison sentence for Jonatán Noel Walas Pirir Quisquinay. He was convicted of murder and attempted homicide on June 26, 2022, in Guatemala City’s Zone 18, where he fatally attacked a victim with a firearm and injured a 2-year-old girl.

In November, the Prosecutor Agency of the Prosecutor’s Office against Femicide in the Southern Region VI, based in Escuintla, presented compelling evidence leading to the preventive detention and processing order against Francisco Cabrera Callejas for femicide on August 24, 2023, in Suchitepéquez.

The incident occurred on August 24, 2023, when, in the neighborhood of El Triunfo, Patulul, Suchitepéquez, the accused allegedly attacked the victim with a bladed weapon.

Furthermore, following the investigative proceedings carried out by the Prosecutor Agency of the Prosecutor’s Office against Femicide in Region VI South, based in Escuintla, achieved before the First Instance Court for Criminal Matters, Narcotics, and Crimes against the Environment on Duty in Escuintla, resolved to issue an indictment for the crime of femicide against Daniel Armando Díaz Amado. He is accused of strangling a woman on November 5, 2023.

Meanwhile, the Prosecutor Agency of the Prosecutor’s Office against Femicide in the Northeastern Region, based in Chiquimula, presented sufficient investigative evidence before the First Instance Court for Crimes of Femicide and Other Forms of Violence against Women and Sexual Violence in Chiquimula. This led to the court issuing an order to open a trial against Marcelo López García for the crime of attempted femicide.

López allegedly shot the victim inside her residence, causing injuries that endangered her life on March 27, 2023, in Esquipulas.
