Attorney General of the Republic and Chief of the Public Ministry, Mrs. María Consuelo Porras Argueta Inaugurates 24-Hour Justice of the Peace Court to Strengthen Assistance to Victims of Coercion and Threats
The Attorney General of the Republic and Chief of the Public Ministry, Mrs. María Consuelo Porras Argueta, together with Mr. Dimas Jiménez y Jiménez, Metropolitan Regional Prosecutor, participated in the inauguration ceremony of the 24-Hour Justice of the Peace Court with Exclusive Jurisdiction over the Crimes of Coercion and Threats, located in Guatemala City.
The newly established court is situated on the second floor of the Public Ministry’s main headquarters and will operate on a permanent basis, providing specialized and continuous service in cases involving the criminal offenses of coercion and threats.
During her remarks, the Attorney General emphasized that coercion and threats rank among the ten most frequently reported offenses before the Public Ministry, underscoring the institutional need to strengthen the criminal justice response to these types of conduct.
In this regard, she highlighted that the creation of this court represents a significant advancement in the prompt, specialized, and effective attention to victims, ensuring an expeditious judicial process and comprehensive protection.
Mrs. Porras Argueta further explained that this judicial body was established at the request of the Public Ministry, with the specific purpose of guaranteeing immediate attention to victims, the timely imposition of precautionary measures, and the effective safeguarding of their rights.
Finally, the Attorney General expressed her gratitude to the institutions that made the establishment of the court possible, recognizing the commitment and dedication of the personnel who work daily to assist and protect victims of crime.
The event was attended by Chief Justice Teódulo Ildefonso Cifuentes, President of the Judicial Branch and the Supreme Court of Justice; Justice Gustavo Adolfo Morales Duarte, Twelfth Member and President of the Criminal Chamber; Justice Luis Mauricio Corado, Tenth Member; Justice Jenny Noemy Alvarado Tení, Thirteenth Member; and Justice René Guillermo Girón, Third Member.
