Public Ministry Recognized for Championing Breastfeeding-Friendly Workspaces
The Public Ministry (PM) received a prestigious recognition from UNICEF and the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (MINTRAB) for its commitment to promoting and implementing breastfeeding-friendly spaces within the institution.
The award ceremony featured Mrs. Julia María Sagüil, Second Deputy Secretary General, who accepted the honor on behalf of the Attorney General and Chief of the Public Ministry, Mrs. María Consuelo Porras Argueta.
Representatives from MINTRAB and UNICEF also attended, including Mrs. Claudia Peneleu, Vice Minister of Social Welfare and Employment, and Mrs. Katherine Silva, Head of Health and Nutrition at UNICEF. Key PM officials present included Mrs. Vivian Amabilia García, Director of Human Resources; Mrs. Lilian Karina Xinico Xiquitá, Acting Secretary of Indigenous Peoples; and Mr. Manuel Antonio Zamora Abadía, Chief of Personnel Development.
This recognition highlights the PM’s dedication to protecting the rights of working mothers and Guatemalan children by creating inclusive, healthy workplaces. These spaces allow employees to express and store breast milk safely, hygienically, and privately during work hours.
Since 2018, under the leadership of Mrs. María Consuelo Porras Argueta, the PM has been advancing initiatives to facilitate continued breastfeeding in appropriate and dignified conditions. In 2024, the PM approved its Breastfeeding Policy and established an Institutional Breastfeeding Committee to ensure compliance and recognize breastfeeding as a fundamental right and essential practice for the healthy development of employees’ children.
The PM’s breastfeeding spaces, located at the Administrative Building and the Central Headquarters in Barrio Gerona, ensure safe milk extraction and storage, supporting proper nutrition and healthy child development. These efforts foster a positive work environment, dignified conditions, and demonstrate the PM’s institutional commitment to equity, health, and family wellbeing.
This recognition by UNICEF and MINTRAB reaffirms the PM’s leadership in implementing policies focused on wellbeing, gender equity, and child protection.
