Public Ministry Launches 2026 Academic Cycle for Training Unit
On February 6, 2026, the Acting Attorney General of the Republic and Chief of the Public Ministry, Ms. Sully Claudet Merlos Moya, officially inaugurated the 2026 academic cycle of the Public Ministry’s Training Unit (UNICAP).
The ceremony also included the participation of Ms. Julia María Juárez, Second Undersecretary General; Mr. Sergio Raúl Ortiz Herrera, Director of UNICAP; and Ms. Sindy Vanessa Bolaños, Acting Head of the Academic Department of the unit.
During her address, Ms. Merlos Moya emphasized that staff training has been a cornerstone of the institution, continuing the legacy of Ms. María Consuelo Porras Argueta. She noted that investing in knowledge and skills development is an investment in justice, public trust, and the strengthening of the rule of law.
She also highlighted the importance of digital transformation and innovation, which have enabled in-person, hybrid, and virtual modalities, incorporating both synchronous and asynchronous activities to broaden access to training.
The event featured a lecture by Ali Arafat Lemus, Director of Research and Development of the Systems Engineering program at Universidad Galileo, who presented on “Demystifying Artificial Intelligence and Its Impact on Criminal Proceedings.”
Authorities also noted that UNICAP’s 2026 academic offerings include courses, diplomas, and continuous training programs in strategic areas such as criminal prosecution, digital transformation, victim services, and restorative justice.
These programs are designed to strengthen technical and administrative competencies while promoting comprehensive training, preparing staff to enhance the quality of services provided to the Guatemalan public.
