Case ‘Adolescentes en Peligro’: Public Ministry Secures Conviction for Human Trafficking, Recruitment of Minors, and Criminal Conspiracy
The Unit Against Criminal Structures of the Prosecutor’s Office Against Human Trafficking obtained a conviction and custodial sentence of 14 years against Isabel S. before the Court of First Instance with Jurisdiction Over Human Trafficking Crimes in the department of Guatemala.
Through an abbreviated criminal procedure, the defendant was convicted of:
- Human trafficking in the form of sexual exploitation
- Recruitment of minors into organized criminal groups
- Illicit association (criminal conspiracy)
The sentence also includes:
- A monetary fine of Q300,000
- Moral and symbolic reparations, including Q8,000 to Hogar La Alianza and Q4,000 to the Ayúdame a Vivir Association
- A court order for the defendant to undergo mandatory psychological counseling
According to the case file, the criminal conduct was committed against two adolescent victims aged 14 and 16, whom the convicted trafficker transported to Fraijanes prison to be subjected to sexual exploitation and criminal recruitment by members of the Barrio 18 gang, a known transnational criminal organization.
