CICNAG Operation Achieves Historic Seizure of 4.9 Tons of Cocaine
The Public Ministry (MP), through the Prosecutor’s Office for Narcotics Crimes, in coordination with the Anti-Narcotics Information Analysis Sub-directorate of the National Civil Police and the Ministry of National Defense, has successfully concluded an operation resulting in the largest cocaine seizure ever recorded in Guatemala.
The inter-institutional operation, which led to the discovery of drugs hidden in containers at Puerto Quetzal, in the municipality of San José, Escuintla, began on Saturday, January 24.
As a result of processing the scene and conducting inspections, 4,169 cocaine packages, weighing approximately 4,927 kilograms, were seized, valued at approximately Q669 million 579 thousand 300, equivalent to USD$85 million 843 thousand 500.
During the operation, more than 30 containers were inspected, with cocaine being located in eight of them.
The operation was carried out in stages, allowing for the progressive discovery of packages that tested presumptively positive for cocaine, in accordance with field tests performed.
These actions are part of the ongoing strategy against drug trafficking and organized crime, executed through the Interinstitutional Center Against Drug Trafficking in Guatemala (CICNAG), a model that coordinates the efforts of security and justice institutions.
This outcome reinforces the Public Ministry’s strategic role in prosecuting drug trafficking through technical and objective investigations, processing complex crime scenes, and effective inter-institutional coordination.
It is important to note that, in 2024, one of the most significant seizures amounted to 4,389 kilograms of cocaine. However, with this recent seizure, that figure has been surpassed, reflecting positive results in the fight against drug trafficking.
Moreover, according to institutional records, there is no precedent for a seizure of this magnitude in the country, making this a historic achievement in the fight against narcotics.
The Public Ministry reaffirms its commitment to continuing the direct fight against drug trafficking, targeting criminal structures and strengthening security and the rule of law for the benefit of the Guatemalan population.
