Attorney General Leads Second Quarterly Meeting of CICNAG

Mrs. María Consuelo Porras Argueta, Attorney General of the Republic and Chief of the Public Ministry, presided over the second quarterly working session of 2025 of the Inter-Institutional Center Against Drug Activity in Guatemala (CICNAG).

The meeting was attended by representatives from the Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of National Defense, Superintendency of Tax Administration (SAT), and the National Institute of Forensic Sciences of Guatemala (INACIF), institutions that are part of this coordination center.

 

The purpose of the meeting was to follow up on actions to combat drug trafficking and review the results achieved during the first half of the year. Various strategies to reinforce efforts against this serious threat were also discussed.

Key Discussions and Developments

During the session, updates were presented on the progress of the tactical coordination table, as well as the implementation of CICNAG’s Inter-Institutional Technological Platform, among other relevant matters.

  • Ministry of the Interior: Fifth Vice Minister for Anti-Narcotics Affairs, Ms. Claudia Palencia
  • Ministry of National Defense: Brigadier General Erwin Rolando Gómez Barrera, Chief of the National Defense General Staff
  • INACIF: Director General Ms. Ingrid Johana Romero Escribá
  • SAT: Mr. Werner Florencio Ovalle Ramírez, Head of SAT

Notable Results

Dismantling of Criminal Structures

In 2025 so far, coordinated efforts through CICNAG have led to the dismantling of 10 criminal organizations involved in drug trafficking in various regions of the country.

Prosecutorial Effectiveness

Through the Anti-Narcotics Prosecutor’s Office, the Public Ministry achieved the following during the first half of the year:

  • 1,253 cases filed
  • 671 searches conducted
  • 264 arrest warrants requested
  • 198 first appearance summonses filed
  • 584 prosecution requests submitted
  • 330 individuals convicted
  • 233 court rulings obtained

Extradition-related Arrests

Thanks to inter-institutional coordination, 9 individuals were apprehended for extradition purposes, bolstering international cooperation to dismantle transnational criminal networks.

 

Drug Seizures

Significant drug seizures were made during this period:

  • 1,596.14 kg of cocaine
  • 844.96 kg of marijuana
  • 8.19 kg of crack
  • 4.11 kg of methamphetamine
  • 81 grams of ecstasy

The estimated value of these seizures is approximately Q160 million.

Eradication of Illicit Crops

Through patrols, intelligence work, and rural operations, authorities eradicated coca bushes, marijuana plants, and poppy crops valued at over Q418 million.

Destruction of Clandestine Airstrips

In efforts to disrupt international drug transit, CICNAG member institutions destroyed 7 clandestine airstrips used for illegal landings: 3 in Petén, 2 in Quiché, and 2 in Alta Verapaz.

Primary Drug-related Crimes Identified

As part of criminal analysis efforts, the following drug-related offenses were identified:

  1. Promotion or encouragement of drug addiction
  2. Illegal trade, trafficking, and storage of drugs
  3. Cultivation of drug-producing plants
  4. Promotion and support of illegal activities
  5. Possession for personal consumption

The Inter-Institutional Center Against Drug Activity in Guatemala (CICNAG) reaffirms its commitment to prevent, combat, and eradicate drug-related criminal activities throughout the country. These results reflect the firm determination of participating institutions to safeguard the security and well-being of the Guatemalan population.
