At International Conference, Public Ministry Highlights the Importance of Dignified Reparation in Cases of Violence Against Women in Guatemala
Ms. Ada Mazariegos, social worker and coordinator of the Referral Network at the Villa Nueva Municipal Prosecutor’s Office, participated as a panelist in the virtual forum “The Importance of Dignified Reparation for Women Victims of Violence in Latin America.”
The event was held under the Jaguar Woman Project, within the framework of the Ibero-American Year of Performing Arts, and aimed to spotlight, through art, the violence women face in our societies.
Also joining the panel were Sandra Sena, historian and human rights activist from Brazil, and Ms. Roxana Arroyo, PhD in Human Rights, who shared regional perspectives on the challenges and progress made regarding reparation for women victims of violence.
Ms. Mazariegos emphasized the importance of dignified reparation, not only as an individual right but also as a result of interinstitutional coordination led by the Public Ministry. These coordinated referral networks provide victims with comprehensive and specialized care.
She explained that, in Guatemala, dignified reparation includes various measures:
- Economic reparation, such as compensation for damages;
- Specialized medical and psychological care, to support full recovery;
- Moral or symbolic reparation, such as public apologies or acts of recognition;
- Guarantees of non-repetition, including institutional reforms and specialized protocols;
- Protection and safety measures, to ensure the well-being of victims and their families.
She also referenced Article 124 of Decree 51-92 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which recognizes victims as full rights holders.
Ms. Mazariegos underscored the need for comprehensive reparation based on human dignity and called for the Public Ministry to continue developing protocols tailored to vulnerable groups, including victims with disabilities.
Her participation followed the institutional directive of the Attorney General and Chief of the Public Ministry, Mrs. María Consuelo Porras Argueta, who has reaffirmed the Public Ministry’s commitment to promoting, protecting, and ensuring the full enjoyment of human rights with equality and justice.
