Attorney General Porras Details Prosecutorial Strategy and Legislative Reforms to Combat Organized Crime and Strengthen Criminal Justice
In representation of the Public Ministry, Attorney General of the Republic and Chief of the Public Ministry, Mrs. María Consuelo Porras Argueta, held a working session with the Board of Directors and the Legislative Bloc Leaders of the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala.
During the session, Mrs. Porras Argueta presented a comprehensive overview of the institutional policies and strategic prosecutorial actions that the Public Ministry is executing to enhance the effectiveness of criminal prosecution, with particular emphasis on confronting organized criminal structures such as maras, transnational gangs, extortion networks, fraudulent schemes, and illicit financial practices such as usury.
She also outlined a series of proposed legislative reforms, deemed essential for closing normative gaps, facilitating more efficient prosecution, and ensuring procedural robustness in cases involving complex and high-impact crimes.
These efforts are framed within the institutional mandate to guarantee access to justice, uphold the rule of law, and ensure the protection of fundamental rights, as well as in response to Congressional Resolution 01-2025, which recognizes the urgent need to address gang-related violence as a national security priority.
