The Public Ministry (MP), reaffirms unwavering commitment to battle human trafficking, achieving since María Consuelo Porras Argueta took office, results that have manifested in the strengthening of the Prosecutors’ Offices and Models of Assistance for Vulnerable Groups. Therefore, since May 2018, as of when María Consuelo Porras Argueta took over as the Attorney General of the Republic and Chief of the Public Ministry to date, the Human Trafficking Prosecution Office has accomplished the identification of 1957 victims, 390 people convicted, 301 convictions, 264 arrest warrants, 1863 people charged, 1,111 search warrants and 1,675 complaints have been received for this crime. The constant work and commitment of prosecutors has led to the dismantling of 57 criminal structures.
The outcomes obtained are of transcendence in the framework of the official presentation of the film «Sound of Freedom», which illustrates the issue of human trafficking and sexual exploitation of children and adolescents, based upon real events that detail the crimes committed against this vulnerable group.
The Attorney General of the Republic and Chief of the Public Ministry, propels an active fight against human trafficking, by the continuous implementation of actions to eradicate practices that not only threaten victims’ values and fundamental rights, but attack their dignity and freedom, upon creating Models of Assistance, the strengthening of the Prosecutors’ Offices through personnel specialization that investigates and assists the victims of crime, consequently making them part of immediate search mechanisms for women and missing children and adolescents.
The Human Trafficking Prosecution Office promotes the investigation and criminal prosecution of the crime of human trafficking, carrying out all actions that tend to protect primarily the life, freedom and sexual indemnity of the victims of the crime, being this crime a scourge that requires the implementation of mechanisms to provide specialized justice to the victims. There are prosecutors’ offices of the Human Trafficking Prosecution Office located in the capital, Quetzaltenango, Chiquimula and Cobán, established since 2021, and soon the implementation of the brand new Prosecutor’s Agency with headquarters in Petén, thus strengthening the actions of prosecution and assistance to victims of the crime of human trafficking in areas of higher incidence.
